A Brief History of Child IQ Testing
Modern IQ testing didn't start as a way to sort children by ability at all. It started as a practical, fairly humane solution to a specific administrative problem, and the story of how it changed since then explains a lot about how the tests work today.
Knowing this origin story reframes a lot of the modern conversation around testing, which often assumes IQ tests were designed from the outset as ranking or sorting tools. The actual history is more modest, and arguably more reassuring, than that assumption suggests.
1905: Binet and a school referral problem
The French government asked psychologist Alfred Binet to solve a concrete problem: identify children who needed extra academic support before they fell too far behind in Paris schools. Binet and his colleague Théodore Simon built a scale of increasingly difficult tasks, and a child's "mental age" was compared against their actual age. Binet was explicit that the scale measured current performance, not fixed, unchangeable capacity — a nuance that got lost fairly quickly once the test crossed the Atlantic.
Binet himself warned against using the scale to rank children by supposedly fixed natural intelligence, a caution that was largely ignored by some of the American psychologists who adapted his work in the following decade.
The intelligence quotient arrives
German psychologist William Stern proposed dividing mental age by chronological age to produce a ratio, and American psychologist Lewis Terman adapted Binet's scale at Stanford, multiplying that ratio by 100 to create the "intelligence quotient" — the IQ score still used, in spirit, today. The 1916 Stanford-Binet became the dominant test in the English-speaking world for decades.
A troubled mid-century chapter
It's worth being direct about this part: early IQ testing in the United States was misused to justify immigration restrictions and forced sterilization programs, built on a badly distorted reading of what the scores actually meant. This is a real, documented part of the history, not a footnote, and it's part of why later generations of psychologists worked so hard to separate the tool from that misuse.
Wechsler and the modern scale
Psychologist David Wechsler judged the single mental-age ratio too crude and, in the 1930s and 40s, built scales that compared a person directly against same-age peers using multiple distinct sub-tests rather than one blended ratio. His children's version, first published in 1949 and now known as the WISC after several revisions, remains the most widely used iq test for kids-style instrument in schools and clinics today.
Wechsler's approach of scoring against same-age peers, rather than computing a mental-age ratio, turned out to be a lasting improvement — it handles adulthood far more sensibly, since a ratio-based score breaks down once mental development levels off, which the peer-comparison method never had a problem with.
This history is a useful reminder that a measurement tool and the uses people put it to are two separate things — the same basic idea of comparing reasoning tasks against age norms can be applied thoughtfully and fairly, or crudely and harmfully, and the difference lies entirely in how the results get used.
What changed, and what stayed the same
Modern scales are re-normed roughly every decade, reviewed carefully for cultural and language bias, and interpreted with far more caution about their limits than early twentieth-century practitioners showed. The basic idea — comparing a child's reasoning against same-age peers using a structured set of tasks — has genuinely held up for over a century, even as the specific tasks, the fairness safeguards, and the professional norms around using the results responsibly have all changed enormously.
It's a pattern worth noticing across the history of science more broadly: a genuinely useful core idea, badly misapplied for a period, later rebuilt with stronger safeguards rather than discarded altogether. IQ testing's history follows that arc about as clearly as any example you'll find in applied psychology.
Reading about this history isn't just academic trivia — it's a useful lens for approaching any single modern score with the right degree of humility, neither dismissing testing outright nor treating a number as more absolute than the century of revision behind it would suggest.
