Using proper anti virus software is a must today.

Especially with the countless new viruses being created this very minute.

One of the nasties i fear is what are called diallers. A dialler is a malicious virus like software that high jacks your internet setting and causes your pc to dial an unsolicited phone number.

This is where the trouble starts. The next thing you know is that you have an enormous phone bill.

Some diallers charge a few cents per minute and some a few dollars.

Mos good antivirus programs scan for these threats.

My advice is to have your pc display the number being dialled when you connect to the internet. This way you ca memorize your internet number and check each time you dial if its been changed.

Make sure you always update your virus scanner definitions regularly

most programs have a trial available for download, i recommend downloading a trial version of all.

Spyware threats

Ever notice popups that appear out of no where that somehow match what you have been searching for the past few hours. Well that would be spyware monitoring your search terms.

This is an invasion of privacy and can slow your internet connection down due the the constant information being transmitted by the spyware.
