The software uses technology known as Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to read and speak words using the phone like a talking barcode reader. The software can read through columns and along a whole page of text. The camera can even read writing on an angle like a can of food for example.

This technology has been around for quite a while but was originally much larger and Kurzweil and NFB were the fist to create a portable version of the text to speech software.
